The news always highlights the horrific happenings in the world today. These are stories we need to hear about and try to understand, but the sadness and seeming lack of plausible solutions are often difficult to digest. We rarely hear of a good deed, positive influence, joyful occurrence, or a quietly beautiful moment. Every now and then, however, we catch a glimpse of something spectacular that reminds us that yes, our world has been and will continue to be a place where amazing, natural, and beautiful things happen every second. Photography, and those with a passion for travel, adventure, and the unknown allow us to witness them.
The 2013 National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest displays only some of the many photos that were submitted. Take a moment to indulge in these photos, and to remember that sometimes, it is still a wonderful world.
